Sister Nilani is the ICU in charge sister at Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital. She has been working at SJGH ICU for 34 years. ICU care is given for severely ill patients. Many kidney transplantations are done and many transplants from brain dead patients are done at Sri Jayawardenapura General hospital.
While treating them, sister Nilani found out that she was also diagnosed with end stage renal failure. She was severely traumatized as to why this is happening to her. She didn’t have words to explain the feeling she had. “I was excessively vomiting, my skin darkened, people couldn’t identify me, I had generalized body swelling, my legs and abdomen were swollen, I couldn’t lie down. I had to lie on the side. It was very sorrowful”. The doctors decided that she need to undergo dialysis, and she underwent dialysis 3 times a week. “My family had to drop me and pick me, I found it difficult to work and I stopped working.” When it became difficult for her to afford treatment, doctors decided to transplant a kidney donated by a brain dead organ donor. She faced it fearlessly in 2021 September and underwent a successful kidney transplantation and is doing well now. She is living happily with her family doing her day-to-day activities and her job. Till now she doesn’t know who donated her the kidney. Because of him/her she is leading a good life. She prays him/her every day to attain Supreme Bliss Of Nibbana.
